About

Officially Tsuyu no Tenjinsha, this shrine has been called Ohatsu Tenjin ever since the playwright Chikamatsu Monzaemon turned a real double love-suicide in its woods into Sonezaki Shinju, one of the most famous works of bunraku. Today a bronze statue of the couple stands in the precinct, heart-shaped ema plaques hang by the hundred and the shrine sells pink love charms. It is surrounded by the Ohatsu Tenjin-dori shopping arcade full of izakaya and bars, so it feels like a pocket of calm in Umeda. There is a flea market in the grounds on the first and third Fridays of the month, and the summer festival in July is surprisingly lively for such a small site.
