About

Shin-Umeda Shokudogai started as a market of food stalls for post-war railway workers and is now a two-storey maze of small counters beneath the elevated JR line. It is the best place in Umeda for cheap, quick, old-fashioned food and drink: standing kushikatsu at Matsuba, takoyaki stands, oden, yakitori and tiny whisky bars. The lighting, menus and patrons all feel decades old. It gets packed after 18:00 with salarymen stopping for a drink before their train.
