About

Set inside Daisen Park, steps from the Daisen Kofun, the Sakai City Museum is the best place to understand the Mozu-Furuichi Kofun Group, since the tombs themselves cannot be entered. A VR theatre shows the kofun from the air and recreates how they looked when built, covered in stones and ringed with haniwa clay figures, and the galleries display real haniwa and burial goods. Other rooms cover Sakai's golden age as a free-trading port city in the 15th and 16th centuries, its tea culture under Sen no Rikyu, and its traditional crafts of knives, matches and incense. A Sakai tourist information centre and bicycle rental are next door.
