About

Built in the mid-5th century and traditionally identified as the tomb of Emperor Nintoku, Daisen Kofun is a zenpo-koen-fun (keyhole-shaped mound) about 486 m long, with three moats and a perimeter path of about 2.8 km. It is an imperial mausoleum under the Imperial Household Agency, so the mound itself, covered in forest, cannot be entered, and from the ground it looks like a wooded hill behind water. That is part of the experience: you walk the moat to the front worship area (haisho) with its torii, then look at the shape from above at the free Sakai City Hall observatory or in the VR film at Sakai City Museum. In 2019 the Mozu and Furuichi groups of 49 kofun were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Daisen Park, the museum and a tourist centre with rental bicycles are directly south.
