About

Built on land donated by the Sumitomo family, whose Keitakuen garden still surrounds it, the Osaka City Museum of Fine Arts opened in 1936 and is one of the oldest public art museums in Japan. Its imposing building of stone and tile combines Western and Japanese forms. The collection of some 8,000 works is strong in Buddhist sculpture, the Abe Collection of Chinese painting, the Yamaguchi collection of Chinese stone Buddhist art, lacquerware and Edo-period painting, and it hosts major touring exhibitions. The renovation completed in March 2025 restored the original entrance hall and opened new spaces, including a cafe and a free-entry lobby. From its steps you look out over Tennoji Park toward Abeno Harukas.
