Tennoji Park and Keitakuen Garden 天王寺公園・慶沢園
Tennoji Park combines the lawn-and-cafe plaza Tenshiba in front of Tennoji Station with Keitakuen, a stroll garden built for the Sumitomo family, a peaceful pond garden beneath Abeno Harukas.
About
Tennoji Park, opened in 1909, holds the City Museum of Fine Arts, Tennoji Zoo and Chausuyama, a hill that was Tokugawa Ieyasu's headquarters in the 1615 Siege of Osaka. Its entrance area Tenshiba, redeveloped in 2015, is a free lawn with cafes, a dog run and children's playground right by the station. The highlight is Keitakuen, a Japanese stroll garden completed in 1918 for the Sumitomo family by the master gardener Ogawa Jihei VII, and donated to the city with the land for the museum. Its large pond with islands, stone lanterns and seasonal azaleas and maples makes for a surprisingly calm half hour with the skyscraper of Abeno Harukas reflected in the water.
