About

Tempozan was created in 1831, in the Tenpo era, from earth dredged out of the Aji River and piled up as a navigational landmark for ships entering Osaka port. It was once about 20 m high and a popular viewing spot, but it was cut down and subsided over time. Listed by the Geospatial Information Authority on official maps, it held the title of Japan's lowest mountain for many years until a lower one was recognised in Sendai (now there is friendly rivalry between them). Today it is a small hill in Tempozan Park with a triangulation point, a summit sign and a little park around it; it takes about 30 seconds to climb. A "mountain-climbing certificate" can be purchased locally. It is a fun 10-minute diversion next to Kaiyukan and the Tempozan Ferris wheel.
