About

Minoh Park, part of the Meiji no Mori Minoh Quasi-National Park, is only 30 minutes from Umeda by Hankyu train, yet it feels deep in the mountains. From Minoh Station a gentle, paved path follows the Minoh River upstream for about 2.8 km past old inns, shops selling momiji tempura (maple leaves fried in sweet batter, a local speciality for over a century), the Ryuanji temple, said to be the birthplace of Japan's lottery, and a small insect museum. The walk ends at Minoh Falls, a single 33 m drop into a pool, framed by red and orange maples from mid to late November. Wild Japanese macaques live in the forest; feeding them is banned and fined. Summer brings cool shade and fireflies in June.
