About
Kyuan-ji was founded by the monk Gyoki in 725 and rebuilt in 1145 as an imperial prayer temple. Its large grounds rise up a hillside, entered through a two-storey gate that is a national Important Cultural Property. The temple belongs to the Kansai 'flower temples' group and is known for its autumn colours and seasonal flowers, and a 1 km circuit path takes about an hour.
