About

Ishikiri Tsurugiya Jinja at the foot of the Ikoma mountains is known throughout Kansai as the god of "denbo" (boils and tumours), and today people come to pray for recovery from illness of every kind. Its distinctive sight is the ohyakudo-mairi: from dawn to dusk, worshippers walk back and forth between the main hall and a stone marker a hundred times, counting with paper strips, a moving and very local scene. The approach from Ishikiri Station is a winding, steep sando lined with dozens of fortune-telling booths, old-fashioned medicine and herb shops, kimono-remake stores and snack stands selling kusa-mochi, giving the place a funky Showa-era feel found nowhere else in the city. It is easy to visit on the Kintetsu Nara line and makes a good half-day out of central Osaka.
