Cine Nouveau シネ・ヌーヴォ
Osaka's distinctive arthouse in Kujo, with an interior by theatre troupe Ishinha's Yukichi Matsumoto, screening retrospectives and Japanese indies.
About
Opened in 1997 in a renovated old theatre building in the Kujo neighbourhood, Cine Nouveau has a striking interior designed by Yukichi Matsumoto of the Ishinha theatre company. It was a hub for the early-2000s wave of Osaka directors and runs retrospectives, independent premieres and festivals, with a second small screen, Cine Nouveau X. The Japan Foundation profiled it in its JFF Independent Cinema series. Foreign films are normally screened in the original language with Japanese subtitles (look for 字幕 on the schedule, not 吹替 = dubbed); Japanese films are usually shown without English subtitles.
