Toji Kobo-ichi Flea Market 東寺 弘法市
On the 21st of every month, over 1,000 stalls fill the grounds of Toji around its five-storey pagoda: antiques, vintage kimono, ceramics, street food and plants. Kyoto's biggest flea market.
About
Kobo-san, held on the 21st to mark the day Kukai (Kobo Daishi) died, has drawn pilgrims to Toji for centuries, and the monthly fair grew alongside them. Today stalls spill across the whole temple precinct: dealers in old indigo textiles and secondhand kimono, tea bowls and lacquerware, tools, bonsai and pickles, plus rows of yakisoba, taiyaki and grilled-squid stands. Prices for kimono and haori can be remarkably low, and bargaining politely is accepted. December's Shimai-Kobo (21 December) is the biggest of the year. Entry to the market is free; entry to the pagoda and halls is separate.
