About

A bridge has stood here since at least the Muromachi period, and in 1589 Toyotomi Hideyoshi had it rebuilt with stone pillars. In the Edo period it was the terminus of the Tokaido, the 53-station highway from Nihonbashi, and some of its bronze giboshi still bear inscriptions from that era; a stone pillar from Hideyoshi's bridge is displayed at the west end. The current steel girder bridge dates from 1950, with hinoki cypress railings renewed between 2022 and 2024. Statues of Yaji and Kita, the comic travellers of "Tokaido Hizakurige", stand at the west end, and the Kamo riverbanks below are a classic evening hangout.
