Ikedaya Incident Site 池田屋騒動之址
Stone marker and Shinsengumi-themed restaurant on the spot where the Shinsengumi raided an inn full of anti-shogunate activists in July 1864.
About
On the night of 8 July 1864, on the eve of the Gion Festival, the Shinsengumi police force burst into the Ikedaya inn on Sanjo-dori. Inside were activists from Choshu, Tosa and other domains. Days earlier the Shinsengumi had arrested and interrogated a supporter, and they believed a plot was under way to set Kyoto alight. After about two hours of fighting in the narrow rooms and stairways, several activists were dead and more than twenty were captured. Historians still argue whether the raid delayed or hastened the fall of the shogunate. The inn was demolished in 1960. A stone marker stands on the street, and since 2009 a restaurant on the site has displayed Shinsengumi models and exhibits.
