ROHM Theatre Kyoto ロームシアター京都
Kunio Maekawa's 1960 Kyoto Kaikan, a landmark of Japanese modernism with deep eaves and a concrete facade, renovated in 2016 into a performing arts complex with a café, bookshop and garden in Okazaki.
About
Kyoto Kaikan was designed by Kunio Maekawa, a student of Le Corbusier, and opened in 1960; its huge eaves and rhythmic concrete structure are one of the classic statements of postwar Japanese architecture. Renamed ROHM Theatre Kyoto after a major renovation in 2016, it hosts opera, ballet, concerts, contemporary theatre and the Kyoto Experiment festival. Even without a ticket, it is worth visiting: the open plaza, Tsutaya bookshop and café are open to all, and the building frames views of Heian Shrine's torii and the Higashiyama hills.
