About

MOMAK opened in 1963 and moved into a building by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Fumihiko Maki in 1986. Its collection focuses on modern art and crafts linked to Kyoto and western Japan: Nihonga painters such as Uemura Shoen and Tsuchida Bakusen, the ceramics of Kawai Kanjiro (more than 400 works), Tomimoto Kenkichi and Kitaoji Rosanjin, and modern photography. The fourth-floor Collection Gallery rotates displays several times a year, and the window lounge frames the giant Heian Shrine torii. The special exhibitions on the third floor change regularly. Note that under the National Museum of Art fee revision, the Collection Gallery fee rises from 430 yen to 1,000 yen from 24 October 2026.
