The tram terminus of the Keifuku Randen line, lined with around 600 glowing poles wrapped in Kyoto Yuzen kimono fabric, plus a hot-spring foot bath right on the platform. A station that is a sight in itself, lit up after dark.

About

The Randen (Keifuku Electric Railroad Arashiyama Line) is Kyoto's last surviving street tram, a single-car line running from Shijo-Omiya through Uzumasa to Arashiyama. Its terminus, renovated in 2013 by designer Yasumichi Morita, is unlike any other station. About 600 acrylic poles, each holding a different pattern of Kyoto Yuzen dyed textile, line the tracks and the path to a little pond called the Dragon's Pool, and they glow softly after sunset. On the platform is the Ekino Ashiyu foot bath fed by Arashiyama Onsen water, and the station concourse holds snack and souvenir stalls. Riding the tram in is half the fun: it rattles past backyards and shares the road with cars near Randen-Saga.
