Philosopher's Path 哲学の道
A 2 km stone path along a cherry-lined canal at the foot of the Higashiyama hills, linking Ginkaku-ji to the Nanzen-ji area past small temples, cafes and sleeping cats.
About
The Tetsugaku-no-michi follows a branch of the Lake Biwa Canal from Ginkaku-ji south to Nyakuoji Shrine near Eikando. It takes its name from the philosopher Nishida Kitaro, a Kyoto University professor who walked it daily in meditation in the early 20th century. Around 400 cherry trees, many planted by the painter Hashimoto Kansetsu and his wife and known as Kansetsu-zakura, form a tunnel over the water in early April, when petals drift along the canal. In June fireflies appear at dusk, in autumn the maples of the hills colour, and in winter it is almost deserted. Detours lead uphill to Honen-in, Anraku-ji, Otoyo Shrine with its guardian mice instead of lions, and Eikando. Small cafes, galleries and craft shops line the route.
