Honen-in 法然院
A free, moss-wrapped hermitage temple just off the Philosopher's Path, entered through a thatched gate between two raked sand mounds whose patterns change with the seasons.
About
Honen-in was founded in 1680 at the site where Honen, founder of Jodo Buddhism, practised with his disciples. The thatched Sanmon gate, covered with moss, frames the steps down to two rectangular mounds of white sand, the byakusadan, on which the monks rake seasonal designs such as maple leaves, water ripples or flowers; walking between them symbolises purification. The approach and grounds are free and remain one of Kyoto's quietest places even when the Philosopher's Path below is busy. The main hall and its garden open only during special openings in early April and early November. The cemetery behind holds the graves of writer Jun'ichiro Tanizaki and economist Hajime Kawakami.
