About

Nishiki-koji has been a food street since fishmongers set up around a cold spring here in the early Edo period, and it still supplies Kyoto's ryotei and home kitchens. The narrow, skylit arcade runs one block north of Shijo between Teramachi and Takakura, packed with family businesses: tsukemono barrels, tofu and fresh yuba, dashi-maki omelette from Miki Keiran, roasted chestnuts, sesame shops, fishmongers grilling skewers of baby octopus with a quail egg in the head, and Aritsugu's legendary knife shop. Most stalls now sell small tasting portions, and the eastern end meets Nishiki Tenmangu shrine and the Teramachi arcade. The market has a no-eating-while-walking rule, so eat at the stall or in the small standing areas many shops provide.
