Kyoto Kanze Noh Theatre 京都観世会館
The main Noh theatre of the Kanze school in Kyoto, by the Okazaki canal, where masked Noh plays and kyogen comedies are performed most months. One of the best places in Japan to see Noh.
About
Noh, the masked theatre perfected by Kan'ami and Zeami in the 14th century, is still performed regularly in Kyoto, and the Kyoto Kanze Kaikan is its main stage. The 1958 building in Okazaki, near Heian Shrine and the Biwa canal, houses a classic cypress stage with a pine painted on the back wall. Regular performances by the Kanze school take place most months, usually on Sundays, often combining several Noh plays with kyogen comedy. Tickets are cheaper than kabuki and the audience includes many serious enthusiasts.
