About

In the basement of the Miyako Messe exhibition hall, opposite the Heian Shrine torii, the Kyoto Museum of Crafts and Design (formerly the Kyoto Museum of Traditional Crafts, renewed in 2020) introduces the 74 crafts officially designated as Kyoto traditional industries: Kyo-yuzen dyeing, Nishijin brocade, Kiyomizu ceramics, lacquer, fans, dolls, Buddhist altar fittings, bamboo work and more. Displays show tools, techniques and finished pieces, and artisans demonstrate their craft on many days. The shop sells high-quality works directly from makers. Free entry makes it a good rainy-day stop in the Okazaki museum cluster, and a useful primer before shopping for crafts.
