About

Umezono started as a kanmi (traditional sweets) cafe in 1927, and its mitarashi dango are unusual: barrel-shaped rather than round, lightly grilled and coated in a sweet-salty soy glaze. The Kawaramachi shop also serves anmitsu, zenzai, warabi-mochi and seasonal shaved ice in a small, old-fashioned room. The sister shops (Umezono Oyatsu, Sanjo Teramachi) sell newer creations like 'kasane', layered sweets in pastel colours.
