Hirosawa Pond 広沢池
A wide, quiet pond in the Saga fields with Mt. Atago and the hills reflected at dawn, a little island with a Kannon statue and cherry trees: a favourite of Kyoto photographers.
About
Hirosawa-no-ike was created in the Heian period, possibly as part of a temple garden, and has been praised as a moon-viewing spot since then. Today it is surrounded by rice paddies and the Kitasaga hills, with a small island holding a stone Kannon reachable on foot when the water is low, and lines of cherry trees along the bank. In early December the pond is drained to harvest carp, a seasonal sight. Calm mornings bring perfect reflections of the mountains, and the pond appears often in period dramas. It is a short walk from Daikaku-ji and a calm counterpart to Arashiyama.
