Hanamikoji Street 花見小路通
Gion's best-known stone-paved street, lined with latticed teahouses and red-walled Ichiriki-tei at the Shijo corner, and the classic frame for a Kyoto evening shot.
About
Stand on the paving south of Shijo-dori and shoot south: the street narrows into a corridor of dark wooden facades, bamboo blinds and paper lanterns that glow once the shops light up around dusk. The southern half toward Kennin-ji is quieter and gives cleaner frames without the Shijo traffic. The side lanes off Hanamikoji are private roads where Gion's residents' association prohibits photography, with posted fines, so keep your camera on the main street.
Highlights
- Long perspective of machiya teahouses and lanterns
- Ichiriki-tei's red bengara wall at the Shijo-dori corner
- Blue hour when the lanterns switch on
- Quieter southern stretch toward Kennin-ji
Tips
- Do not photograph the private side lanes: signs warn of fines.
- Never chase, block or touch geiko and maiko; let them pass.
- Come early morning for an almost empty street.
- Tripods block the narrow road; shoot handheld.
