Gojo-Rakuen and the Takase Canal 五条楽園・高瀬川
A small quarter of grand former teahouses along the willow-lined Takase canal south of Gojo, with ornate wooden facades and tile-work. Now quiet, with guesthouses, cafés and the Umeyu sento.
About
South of Gojo-dori between the Kamo river and the Takase canal, Gojo-Rakuen was once a licensed pleasure district. Many of its large two- and three-storey wooden buildings survive, with elaborate lattice, curved balconies and tiled ornament, some now reborn as guesthouses, cafés and studios. The Takase canal, built in the 1610s for boats carrying goods to Kyoto, runs through it with willows on its banks. Together with the Sauna no Umeyu bathhouse, it's a quiet slice of old Kyoto close to downtown.
