About

Umeyu is a decades-old neighbourhood bath on Kiyamachi-dori south of Gojo, a few minutes from the Kamo river. In 2015 it was taken over by Minato Mitsuya, who was in his twenties, and turned into the anchor of a small revival of Kyoto sento culture, with zine-style posters, events and a loyal following. The building keeps its old tiled tubs and wooden lockers, and a well-loved sauna and cold bath make it a sauna destination. The Takase canal outside is lined with willows and makes a pleasant walk after bathing. It stands within the historic Gojo-Rakuen district, among old teahouse buildings.
