Gojo Ohashi Bridge 五条大橋
The Kamo River bridge of the Benkei and Ushiwakamaru legend, with a statue of the pair and wooden-style railings with giboshi finials.
About
Gojo was the route for pilgrims to Kiyomizu-dera, and in 1590 Hideyoshi rebuilt it with stone pillars along with Sanjo Ohashi. Legend places the famous duel between the warrior monk Benkei and young Ushiwakamaru (Minamoto no Yoshitsune) on the bridge, although the old Gojo crossing was actually at today's Matsubara-bashi. A small, cute statue of the pair stands in the median at the west end. Today's bridge carries National Route 1, but keeps decorated railings with giboshi, and offers views up to the Higashiyama hills.
