Fushimi Yumehyakushu 伏見夢百衆
A sake tasting cafe and shop in Gekkeikan's handsome former head office, pouring flights from Fushimi's breweries a few steps from the willow-lined canal. The easiest way to taste the district.
About
Fushimi, in Kyoto's south, is one of Japan's great sake towns thanks to its soft groundwater, and its old brewery quarter is a lovely afternoon walk. Yumehyakushu occupies a 1919 wooden building that was once Gekkeikan's office, with a cafe counter serving tasting sets of three sake from different Fushimi brewers, sake-lees sweets and coffee, and a shop selling bottles from roughly twenty local breweries. It sits on the Horikawa canal where the jikkokubune sightseeing boats run, a short walk from Gekkeikan's Okura museum and Kizakura's beer and sake restaurant.
Highlights
- Tasting flights of Fushimi sake from different breweries
- 1919 Taisho-era wooden office building
- Bottles from about 20 local breweries for sale
- On the canal where jikkokubune boats run
- Sake-lees sweets and soft-serve
Tips
- Pair with the jikkokubune canal boat (spring to autumn)
- Daytime only, so this is a lunchtime-to-afternoon stop
- Ask staff to compare a dry Fushimi junmai with a sweeter local style
- Chushojima Station (Keihan) is the closest; Fushimi-Momoyama also works
