Port of Kobe Earthquake Memorial Park 神戸港震災メモリアルパーク
A stretch of quay left broken and tilted exactly as the 17 January 1995 earthquake left it, with a small photo exhibition.
About
At 5:46 a.m. on 17 January 1995 the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake struck the Kobe region, killing more than six thousand people and wrecking the port. When the waterfront of Meriken Park was repaired, the city kept about sixty metres of the shattered quay untouched: tilted lamp posts, cracked paving and sunken blocks still lie where the ground left them. The memorial was completed in July 1997 to pass on the lessons of the disaster, the importance of the port and the way people from Japan and abroad worked together to rebuild it. A small shelter shows photographs of the damage and the recovery.
