About

Tokoji, better known as Sogo Reido, is where Sakura Sogoro is enshrined. In the 1650s the headman went over his lord's head to petition the shogun about crushing taxes, won relief for the villagers and was executed with his family for the offence, becoming a folk hero celebrated in kabuki. The grand main hall is free to visit, and the Sogo Goichidaiki-kan tells his story through a series of large, theatrical dioramas, while the Reihoden treasure hall shows related relics. In June the hydrangea garden behind the main hall, with several thousand plants, is one of the best in Chiba, and the hydrangea festival brings koto and shakuhachi concerts and tea ceremonies on Sundays.
