About

Known locally as Makata-sama, this ancient shrine was the guardian shrine of the Sakura domain in the Edo period and heads a network of 18 Makata shrines around Lake Inba. It enshrines Wakumusubi, a deity of food and growth, and its forest of old trees is dominated by the great cedar behind the main hall, estimated at more than 1,300 years old and regarded as one of the biggest in eastern Japan. Behind the main sanctuary stands the small Hitsuku shrine, which draws visitors interested in its spiritual lore. It is rarely busy, deeply atmospheric, and a world away from the airport just ten kilometres east.
