Unagihime Shrine 宇奈岐日女神社
Yufuin's ancient guardian shrine, a hushed cedar grove at the edge of the rice fields that most tourists on Yunotsubo street never find.
About
Unagihime Jinja is listed in the 10th-century Engishiki register, making it one of the oldest shrines in Oita. Its deity is linked to the legend that the Yufuin basin was once a lake drained by a giant, and it is still the spiritual heart of local farmers. The precinct is a quiet rectangle of tall trees (many old cedars were lost to a 1991 typhoon, but the grove has regrown) around a simple wooden hall, with views of Mt. Yufu from the approach across the fields. Locals call it Rokusho-sama. A 20-minute walk from Yufuin Station, it feels a world away from the crowds.
