Yufuin Tamanoyu 由布院 玉の湯
Revered Yufuin ryokan founded in 1953 in a wild garden of tall trees, with private cottages, a famously relaxed style and a cafe and shop open to non-guests.
About
Tamanoyu began in 1953 as a Zen temple's retreat house and grew into one of Japan's most admired ryokan, a gentle cluster of wooden cottages hidden in a garden deliberately left to look like a natural woodland. The founders helped shape Yufuin's move away from mass tourism toward small, rural-style inns. Rooms are a calm blend of Japanese and Western, many with their own baths, and the meals focus on seasonal mountain produce. The Tea Room Nicol and Yufuin-yaki shop let day visitors enjoy its quiet character on the walk to Lake Kinrin.
