About

Tanoura Beach is a man-made beach in Oita city near the border with Beppu, just past Umitamago aquarium and the Takasakiyama monkey park. Breakwaters keep the water calm, making it a favourite family beach in summer (July 1 to August 31 in recent years) with lifeguards, a rest house with hot showers and toilets. Out of season it is a pleasant spot for walks, with Takasakiyama, the Beppu skyline and the Kunisaki Peninsula across the bay.

Tips

Take the Oita Kotsu bus from Beppu toward Oita and get off at Tanoura.
Swimming is allowed until 17:00 in season.
Combine with Umitamago aquarium and Takasakiyama monkey park nearby.
Hot showers cost about 100 yen; bring coins.
