The Beppu Kaihin Sunayu sand bath has been redeveloped as part of SHONIN PARK, a beachfront park on the Shoningahama shore north of central Beppu. The experience is the same simple pleasure: you change into the provided yukata, lie in a shallow trench on the beach under a little roof and an attendant packs warm, spring-heated sand over your body for about 15 minutes while you look at the sky and listen to the sea. Afterwards you shake off and rinse in the indoor bath. Compared with Takegawara's dark indoor hall, this is bright, airy and open to the bay, and it is easy to combine with a stroll along the waterfront promenade. Reservations through the official site are recommended because walk-ins can mean a wait.
