About

Hovercraft once linked Oita Airport to the city until 2009, and the service returned on 26 July 2025, operated by Oita Daiichi Hover Drive with three new 80-passenger Griffon Hoverwork craft capable of about 45 knots. Boarding at the airport is from a new terminal a 2 to 3 minute walk south of the arrivals hall; the city end is at Nishi-Oita port, with parking and bus connections. The ride is loud, bouncy and fun, with views back to Beppu and Mt. Tsurumi. There are around four round trips a day, plus a Nishi-Oita bay cruise on weekends and holidays; prices are lower when paid through the operator's app.
