Yokohama Customs Headquarters ('Queen') 横浜税関本関庁舎(クイーンの塔)
1934 customs house with a green Islamic-style dome, the 'Queen' of Yokohama's Three Towers.
About
The customs house was where Yokohama earned its living: from the opening of the port, silk, tea and later all kinds of goods passed through the customs authorities here. The present headquarters was completed in March 1934 after the earthquake destroyed its predecessor. Its slender tower, topped with a green, onion-shaped dome that gives it an exotic, Islamic-inspired look, became known as 'Queen', the most elegant of the Three Towers. The building is still the working customs office; a small free museum on the ground floor explains the port's trade history and the fight against smuggling.
