Sumiyoshi (Kawasaki Daishi Kuzumochi) 住吉
An old kuzumochi house on the Kawasaki Daishi approach where you can sit down for the temple's famous sweet: wobbly fermented-starch cakes drowned in black syrup and roasted soybean flour.
About
Kuzumochi in the Kawasaki and Ikegami style is not made from kudzu root but from wheat starch fermented for over a year, steamed into pale, springy slabs with a faint tang. Served with kuromitsu black-sugar syrup and kinako (roasted soybean flour), it has been the souvenir of Kawasaki Daishi pilgrimages since the Edo period. Sumiyoshi, on the Daishi approach, is one of the best-known makers, and its tea room lets you eat it fresh with green tea, which is far better than the boxed version that only keeps a day or two. There are also seasonal sweets and anmitsu. It makes a calm pause after the bustle of the main hall.
