Jogashima Umanose Domon 城ヶ島 馬の背洞門
A natural sea arch on the wild southern coast of Jogashima at the tip of the Miura Peninsula, reached across rugged rock terraces, with tide pools, lighthouses and Fuji views around it.
About
Jogashima is a small island linked by bridge to Misaki at the southern tip of the Miura Peninsula. Its south coast is a dramatic landscape of tilted rock layers and wave-cut terraces, and the highlight is Umanose Domon ("horses back cave gate"), an 8 m natural arch carved by waves and wind. Walking trails cross the rocks between the arch, Jogashima Park with its Awasaki lighthouse, and the 1870 Jogashima lighthouse on the west side. On clear days you see Izu Oshima and Mount Fuji. Combine with lunch of tuna in Misaki, famous for maguro.
