Grave of Minamoto no Yoritomo 源頼朝の墓(法華堂跡)
Hillside stone pagoda marking the tomb of Japan's first shogun, on the site of his memorial hall.
About
Minamoto no Yoritomo founded the Kamakura shogunate, Japan's first government led by warriors, and died in 1199. He was buried in a memorial hall, the Hokke-dō, built on the hill behind his residence, a short walk from Tsurugaoka Hachimangu. The hall is long gone, and the site is a national historic site. The modest five-tier stone pagoda that marks the grave today was set up in the 18th century by the Shimazu lords of Satsuma, who claimed descent from Yoritomo. Climb the stone steps from the lane: the simplicity of the tomb, and the quiet, is in striking contrast to the power its occupant once held.
