Dankazura (Wakamiya-oji) 段葛
Raised, cherry-lined path down the middle of Kamakura's main avenue, laid out under Minamoto no Yoritomo.
About
Wakamiya-ōji is the straight avenue that Minamoto no Yoritomo laid out from the sea to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu as the spine of his new capital. Down its centre runs the Dankazura, a raised pedestrian path between stone kerbs, traditionally said to have been built in 1182 when Yoritomo prayed for the safe birth of his heir. The path narrows as it nears the shrine, a trick of perspective that makes it look longer than it is. Today the Dankazura runs about 500 metres from the second torii to the third, and it was fully renovated between 2014 and 2016, with new cherry trees planted along its length.
