About

Fukuzumirō opened in 1890 at Tōnosawa, one of the 'Seven Hot Springs of Hakone', where inns line the steep gorge of the Hayakawa River just above Hakone-Yumoto. Its rambling wooden buildings, joined by corridors and staircases, are among the finest surviving examples of a Meiji- and Taisho-era Japanese inn, with carved transoms, bamboo details and rooms overlooking the river. The buildings are registered tangible cultural properties and were included in a group of Hakone's large wooden inns recognised as 20th-century heritage. The inn draws water from its own source, adjusted with spring water and fed straight into its baths.
