Fujiya Hotel 富士屋ホテル
Classic resort hotel opened in Miyanoshita in 1878, among the oldest Western-style hotels in Japan.
About
Yamaguchi Sennosuke opened the Fujiya Hotel in the hot-spring village of Miyanoshita in 1878, aiming it at the foreigners who were beginning to explore Japan. Over the following decades it grew into a fantasy of Japanese and Western styles: the main building of 1891 with its Japanese gables, the Flower Palace wing of 1936 with its floral decorations, and the dining hall with its painted ceilings. Royals, statesmen and film stars stayed here. Many of the buildings are registered tangible cultural properties, and after a renovation of more than two years the hotel reopened in 2020. Non-guests can visit its restaurants and café.
