Toshimaya (Hato Sablé), Kamakura 豊島屋 本店
Kamakura confectioner founded in 1894, maker of the dove-shaped Hato Sablé butter biscuit.
About
Toshimaya was founded in Kamakura in 1894, when the old shogunal capital was turning into a seaside resort for Tokyo's elite. According to the company, around 1897 its first owner, Kubota Kyūjirō, was given a large biscuit by a foreign visitor and set out to create his own butter biscuit, shaped like a dove. The dove was chosen because pigeons were revered as messengers at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, whose name plaque writes the character 'hachi' (八) as two doves. The Hato Sablé became Kamakura's signature souvenir. The main store on Wakamiya-oji, near the second torii of the shrine approach, sells the biscuits in their famous yellow tins along with traditional wagashi.
