About

Yoyogi Park occupies the site of the 1964 Olympic athletes' village (one Dutch athletes' cottage still stands) and, before that, a US military housing area. Today it's where Tokyo lets loose: on Sundays the famous Rollers rockabilly dancers in leather and pompadours twist by the Harajuku entrance, buskers and drum circles fill the paths, and the event plaza across the road hosts near-weekly festivals, Thai, Vietnamese, Okinawan, Earth Day, beer and ramen fairs. The huge lawn fills with picnics in cherry-blossom season and the ginkgo trees turn gold in late November. There's a bird sanctuary, a cycling course with rental bikes, and the dog run is a people-watching treat.
