About
Spread across two gardens linked by a monorail-replacement bridge and path, Ueno Zoo houses around 300 species. The East Garden has the Gorilla Woods, Tiger Forest, Asian elephants and the remains of an old five-storey pagoda from Kan'ei-ji; the West Garden has the African savanna, hippos, Aye-ayes in the nocturnal house and the Shinobazu Pond waterbirds. Twin pandas Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei left for China on 27 January 2026, leaving Japan without pandas for the first time in decades; the zoo is now spotlighting its shoebills and the old Panda Forest still houses red pandas and other species. Admission prices did not change.
