About

Built in 1938 and rescued by a local preservation trust, the three Ueno Sakuragi Atari houses sit around a little gravel-and-timber alley a block from the busy Kototoi-dori corner. Instead of a museum the trust filled them with neighbourhood businesses: Yanaka Beer Hall pours a house craft beer you can only drink in this part of town, VANER bakes dark, crackling sourdough loaves and cardamom buns, and Oshiolive lets you taste dozens of salts and olive oils before you buy. Upstairs rooms host workshops, small markets and events, and on weekends the alley fills with families on benches with a beer and a bun. It feels like what Yanaka is: unhurried, practical and quietly stylish.
