About

Kashiwayu served Yanaka as a sento for around 200 years before closing in 1991; two years later it reopened as SCAI The Bathhouse, keeping the grand temple-style gabled roof, the noren-hung entrance, the shoe lockers and the tall ceiling that once let steam escape. Inside, the bathing hall has been stripped back to a bright, top-lit gallery where SCAI shows serious international and Japanese contemporary artists, the kind of names you would expect in Roppongi, not on a back lane between temples. Exhibitions change every couple of months, entry is free, and you can be in and out in fifteen minutes, which makes it an easy, slightly surreal detour on any Yanaka walk.
