About

Few train stations contain a serious art museum, but Tokyo Station Gallery has been inside Tatsuno Kingo's landmark station building since 1988. After the station's restoration in 2012, the second- and third-floor galleries now show off the original brickwork, wooden beams and charred timbers from the 1945 air raids, giving each exhibition a warm, historic backdrop. Shows range widely, from modern Japanese painters and architects to design, photography and folk art, and are usually more offbeat than the big Ueno blockbusters. The best moment comes between floors, when the route leads onto an internal gallery overlooking the ornate Marunouchi North dome, with its restored eagle reliefs and zodiac carvings, from just a few metres away.
